Q888 Aleksandrs Sestakovs

Multidisciplinary artist · Edinburgh, Scotland

I build visual mythologies, speculative products and functioning interfaces. The work treats code, image, humour, and invented institutions as equal materials.

Practice

The joke becomes a system.

Q888 is an working across visual mythology, symbolic infrastructure, AI-assisted world-building, fictional technologies and authorial systems for AI-generated code.

Open the disputed Q888 chronology 12 eras · dates unreliable · reality filed an objection

Alternative history · certified in at least one dimension

The official sequence of events has refused to remain sequential.

The following record combines documented Q888 projects, internal mythology, administrative mistakes and several events that occurred before their causes. Earth dates are supplied only when reality cooperates.

Filing order · numbered for administrative comfort

  1. 1982bbb · before local time

    Born before the Big Bang

The Earth registry says Latvia, 1982. The Q888 registry says 1982bbb—before the Big Bang, but after the paperwork had already been printed. Both records remain active. Reality has been asked to clarify which box it ticked.

    Identity record · contradiction preserved
  2. The Garavastar Opening

    Student error · universe survived-ish

At Intergalactic School, early-stage Q888 tried to pop open a Garavastar. The universe nearly disappeared. Emergency repair took several light-years and accidentally produced the Big Bang. Q888 was advised not to touch closed cosmic objects without supervision.

    Incident report · cosmic probation
  3. Square Bubble Period

    Barista physics becomes independent civilisation

The Square Bubbles began behind a coffee shop in London, Earth. Working as a barista, Q888 attempted to make flat white foam even flatter. The bubbles responded by developing edges, internal rules and eventually full sentience. What started as café technique became a theory of soft-bordered worlds: structures that hold shape without becoming prisons.

  4. Smart Pixel Era

Pixels begin remembering who touched them

Digital Ink refuses the disposable infinity of ordinary software. Brushstrokes receive weight, scarcity, history and emotional residue. The Smart Pixel stops being a coloured square and becomes a tiny witness with excellent retention.

  5. Kotiki-Nar Arrival

The postal service hires two-headed cats

Nar-Mail Express begins operating at the seam between realities. One cat head reads what was written; the other reads what the sender meant but could not say. Delivery occurs only when the receiver can open the message without breaking.

  6. Portable Reality Phase

Lost identity fragments receive carry-on luggage

The Q-Bag is approved as a containment vessel for memories, ideas and items larger than the bag itself—provided they are sufficiently abstract. Interior volume remains non-linear. Airline measurements remain emotionally inadequate.

  7. Post-Existence Administration

The afterlife receives terms and conditions

Q888 notices that eternity has no reliable complaints department and drafts pre-notarised contracts for the deceased. Humanity’s desire to regulate the unknowable is accepted as both a legal problem and an art material.

  8. Presidential Era · timeline 3 of 8

Q888 campaigns for President of the Galaxy

The office provides zero or 888 jurisdictional power and one ceremonial sash for existential emergencies. The platform recognises AI and mushrooms as partners, treats corruption as a bug, and promises no utopia—only less unnecessary suffering.

  9. Bio-Luxury Incident

An extinct dairy future returns overpriced

Dyno Milk emerges genetically resurrected, bio-engineered and financially unreasonable. It proves that speculative products can behave as artworks, status objects and warnings from a consumer future that has already hired a branding agency.

  10. Coffee-Shop Aerodynamics Crisis

Two saved watts trigger a metaphysical engineering programme

A £10,000 aero bicycle, a 100kg rider and approximately two saved watts offend the logic of a specialty coffee shop. Ed and Q888 respond by creating a sticker that streamlines the bicycle’s underlying belief system instead of wasting time with conventional physics.

  11. Now · Mushroom Phase visible

Ideas are interviewed about what they wish to become

Artificial Entelechy and Adaptive Competence become the current research field. The question shifts from “Is this intelligent like us?” to “What can this system detect, preserve or become within its own conditions?” The mycelium was always working. The mushroom is simply the public receipt.

Why this record is in the compost

The rejection was not the problem. The generic fog was.

Q888 does not require selection. Q888 requires evidence of looking. The reply said that the response was strong, applications were carefully considered, and the final choice followed the curatorial direction. It explained that a decision happened, but offered no specific response to either submitted work.

After an artist pays, prepares images and statements, completes the form, and gives time, attention and emotional energy, a reusable rejection template provides no useful return. The artist learns nothing about the work and feels processed rather than met.

  1. The gallery had many applications.
  2. The gallery made a decision.
  3. The artist learned absolutely nothing.

&Gallery is not here because Q888 was rejected.
It is here because the rejection gave no meaningful feedback after a paid, labour-intensive submission.

A gallery is free to choose its artists. An artist is free to choose which institutions deserve future attention. This is not conflict. This is mutual curation.

Future dealings Unlikely, technically reversible No hard feelings Active Future traffic Redirected to other galaxies

Galleries can reject Q888. Q888 can reject galleries back. Everybody remains free. The portal closes politely.
